Why You Can't Save Twitter Videos Natively

Twitter and X.com do not give users a built-in option to download videos to their device. You can bookmark a tweet or add it to a list, but those are cloud references — if the original tweet is deleted or the account is suspended, the video disappears with it. The only official offline option is Twitter/X Premium's offline viewing, which is locked inside the app and tied to your subscription.

This is frustrating when you come across a breaking news clip, a funny moment, a sports highlight, or a tutorial that you want to keep. Fetchr lets you save any public Twitter or X video directly to your device as a standard MP4 file in seconds.

How to Download a Twitter/X Video Using Fetchr

Step 1: Copy the Tweet URL

On the Twitter or X app (iOS or Android), open the tweet that contains the video. Tap the Share button (the upload arrow icon) and select Copy link. The URL will look like: https://x.com/username/status/1234567890123456789

On desktop, right-click the date/time stamp on the tweet (not the video itself) and choose Copy link address. You can also copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar when the tweet is open on its own page. Both twitter.com and x.com URLs work identically with Fetchr.

Step 2: Paste Into Fetchr and Fetch Info

Open fetchr.cc in any browser and paste the tweet URL into the input box. Click Get Video Info. Fetchr will look up the tweet and display the video thumbnail and any available quality options so you can confirm it's the right clip before committing to a download.

Step 3: Select Quality and Download

Twitter typically encodes videos in up to 1080p MP4 with AAC audio, depending on what the poster uploaded. Select the highest available quality for the best result, then click Download. Watch the progress bar, and when it hits 100% click Save File to save the MP4 to your device.

What Types of Twitter/X Content Can Be Downloaded?

Fetchr handles all publicly accessible Twitter video content, including:

  • Standard tweet videos (any length up to Twitter's 2:20 limit)
  • Twitter Spaces recordings (when saved as video)
  • GIFs — Twitter converts GIFs to MP4 internally; Fetchr downloads the MP4 version
  • Native video ads, if they are standard hosted video (not VAST/streaming ads)

Live streams cannot be captured while broadcasting, but if the broadcaster saves the stream as a recording to their profile, that recording can be downloaded afterward.

Downloading Twitter Videos on iPhone

Open the Twitter or X app, find the tweet, tap Share › Copy link. Then open Safari (important: use Safari, not the in-app browser) and go to fetchr.cc. Paste the URL and tap Download. Once the file processes, tap the green Save File button. Safari's download manager will catch it — tap the file in the download manager, then tap Share › Save to Files or Save to Photos to add it to your Camera Roll.

If the video doesn't appear in Photos automatically, open the Files app, navigate to Downloads, find the MP4, and tap Share › Save Video.

Downloading Twitter Videos on Android

Copy the tweet link from the app, then open Chrome or any browser and navigate to fetchr.cc. After the download completes and you tap Save File, Chrome will save the MP4 to your Downloads folder. Open your Files app or Gallery app — most Android launchers will index the video and show it in your media library automatically within a minute or two.

Are Private or Locked Account Videos Downloadable?

No. Fetchr can only access content that is publicly visible without logging in. If a tweet is from a protected account (the padlock icon next to the username), or if the tweet has been deleted, Fetchr will return an error. This is by design — Fetchr respects access controls set by the original poster.

Video Quality on Twitter/X

The maximum resolution Twitter/X allows for standard accounts is 1920×1200 pixels, though most video tweets are 1280×720 (720p) or 1920×1080 (1080p). Verified and monetizing accounts can upload higher quality video. Fetchr will always offer the highest bitrate stream available for that specific tweet — what you get depends on what the poster originally uploaded.

Short clips and reaction videos are often only available at 480p because that's what was recorded or posted. In that case, Fetchr downloads the best available version — there is no way to increase quality beyond the source.

Privacy: Does Fetchr Store Your Downloads?

Fetchr does not store or log the URLs you submit. Downloaded files are held on the server for up to 30 minutes and then automatically deleted. No account is needed, and nothing is tracked. If you're downloading sensitive content, your privacy is protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work for X.com and the old twitter.com URLs?
Yes. Both domains point to the same platform and both URL formats work identically with Fetchr.

Can I download a Twitter video without an account?
Yes. Fetchr does not require you to log in to Twitter or X, and you don't need a Fetchr account either. Just paste the tweet URL and download.

The video only shows as a GIF — is that normal?
Twitter converts all GIFs to looping MP4 files internally. When you download a "GIF tweet" through Fetchr, you'll get an MP4 file. You can convert it to a real GIF using a tool like Ezgif if needed, but MP4 is a better format anyway (smaller file, higher quality).

Why is the video quality lower than what I see on Twitter?
Twitter streams adaptive video in your browser (adjusting quality based on your connection). Fetchr downloads the highest static bitrate available for that tweet, which may be labeled differently. If the source video was uploaded in 720p, you won't be able to get 1080p.

Is it legal to download Twitter videos?
Downloading for personal, offline use is widely accepted in most countries. Do not re-upload, redistribute, or monetize content you don't own. Respect the original creator.
